Things to do

Take a drive out through Glengarry
6 miles from the hostel along the A87 a small road heads off to Kinlochourn, through the famous Glen Garry. This area was once quite heavily populated but since the highland clearances in the 1800s has a quiet and deserted feel. The photo above looks along Loch Garry to the mountain of Gairich.
Visit a Castle
With many castles in the local area, you may find it hard to decide which one to visit! Above is Eilean Donan Castle, 40 minutes by car from the hostel.  Destroyed in 1719 by an English Naval bombardment, it was rebuilt early in the 20th century and is now open to the public.
Ride a Steam Train
Take a ride on the "Jacobite" steam train. From May to September this train runs from Fort William to Mallaig returning on the same day. The train travels on the West Highland line - amongst the most scenic train rides in the world, and also stops at Glenfinnan, scene of the beginning of the Jacobite rising of 1745.
Go for a paddle
Take a day out exploring the local Lochs and waterways at close quarters.  Canoes and sailing boats can be hired locally at the Great Glen Water Park on Loch Oich; they also offer supervised activities including white water rafting on the River Garry.
Climb Ben Nevis
Britain's highest mountain is only 22 miles from Loch Lochy - why not spend a day heading for the top?  You'll need good boots, waterproofs and a packed lunch to relish on the summit; it's a long 9-mile return trip but the views more than compensate for the effort!
Visit Fort Augustus
How about having a relaxing day in an attractive village on the banks of Loch Ness?  You can go to the Clansman Centre and try on the kilt, visit the Rare Breeds Park, watch boats navigating their way through the huge system of locks, or spend time Nessie-spotting of course!  Fort Augustus is 13 miles north of Loch Lochy on the A82.
